Mojang, developer of the hugely successful Minecraft, has announced that the upcoming Minecraft movie is to be directed by none other than Rob McElhenney, best known for his role as Mac in the hit comedy TV show It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

A statement on Mojang’s website reads: “Some of you may have seen this guy hanging around MINECON in London a couple weeks ago. He’s Rob McElhenney, and he’s going to be directing the upcoming Minecraft movie.”

“Hey Mojang, let’s do something strange and wonderful.”

New director Rob McElhenney also took to Twitter to react to the news: “Hey Mojang, let’s do something strange and wonderful.”

Shawn Levy, director of Night At The Museum, was Warner Bros. original pick as director, but creative differences between both parties saw him depart the project.

The Minecraft movie will also see Roy Lee (The Lego Movie) step in as producer and Warner Bros. executive Jon Berg will oversee the live-action project.

We’re still a few years out from the movie’s official release, but given the delays surrounding other video game movies, it’s reassuring to know that the pieces are starting to fall into place.
