Halo, a franchise that defined a generation of shooters. Hyper competitive players, all with one goal on their minds: Kill their enemies, and dry hump their faces. While it might be the ultimate humiliation move in shooters, Bungie is moving away from this tea-bagging culture that they more-or-less started with the Halo franchise. Instead, the company is focusing on more positive gaming habits with Destiny.
The last ten years have been adolescent males shooting each in the face and squatting on each other’s corpses
In a recent interview with Edge Magazine, Bungie’s Chris Butcher explained that Destiny will reward positive social behavior in the shooter.
“If you look back at online multiplayer gaming for the last ten years, the dominant thread has been adolescent males shooting each other in the face and squatting on each other’s corpses,” Butcher explained. “That emerges from design decisions. The community gets attracted towards that, and that is popular to a lot of other people and so it tends to exclude others.”
Butcher doesn’t believe that you can ever rid the “toxic” behavior from online games, but by using things that encourage positive behavior like Destiny’s gesturing system, it will encourage more friendliness between players. “I don’t think you can ever design toxic behavior out, but what you can do is prevent them being able to ruin other players’ experiences,” said Butcher.
The friendly and cooperative world of Destiny is slated to arrive in 2014 for current and next-gen consoles.
