Epic Games is making a ton of money with Fortnite. How much is a ton? Research firm Superdata says that the game made $223 million in March 2018, which was a 75% jump from their gross revenues in February. Fortnite is the top grossing title on consoles, ahead of traditional games like Far Cry 5, FIFA 18, and Call of Duty: WWII.
Seemingly this revenue was derived from the selling of the Battlepass and V-Bucks currency that players can use to purchase cosmetic skins and items for their characters. Though the Battle Royale portion of Fortnite is free to play, Epic does sell Early Access to its “Save the World” mode.
While many have tried the free-to-play route on consoles, none have come close to the success that Epic is seeing with Fortnite: Battle Royale. Superdata says that Fortnite is now the largest free-to-play game on consoles of all time in terms of revenue generated and monthly active users.
While it is the top grossing console title for March 2018, the money has been derived from all platforms, and Epic has made Fortnite available just about everywhere. Fortnite: Battle Royale is currently free to play on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and mobile devices.
On PC, Fortnite was only the 5th highest grossing game of the month. It was behind the likes of Dungeon Fighter Online, League of Legends, and others. On mobile, it didn’t crack the top 10 though the research firm says that in U.S. the game was number one in revenue on iOS.
