The third and final day of Mann vs. Machine details is upon us, and no Team Fortress 2 content update would be complete without the addition and possibility of hats. Yesterday, Valve detailed how Upgrade Stations and Tactics would factor into your success as a team. Today, they’re revealing “Mann Up Mode” which will offer players some cosmetic incentives to throw down some change.

In addition to 35 new achievements, the Mann vs. Machine update for Team Fortress 2 will implement “Mann Up Mode” which is enabled only when you’re playing on an official Mann Co. server. The mode allows you to earn special items purely for cosmetic purposes, but to do so you must purchase a “Tour of Duty Ticket” for $0.99. Note that the Mann vs. Machine update is still completely free, it’s just this specific mode you’ll have to pay for.

A Tour of Duty Ticket also grants you a Tour of Duty Badge (ToDB)  which tracks your progress across multiple missions. Each mission you complete will be denoted on your ToDB and displayed for the world to see. Completing an entire ToDB allows you to receive a random rare item reward and an upgraded ToDB of a higher rank, which gives you incentive to complete each mission again and earn more items, adding to the re-play value.

Valve is releasing just one Tour of Duty with the launch of Mann vs. Machine, but promises to release more Tours in the near future. According to the FAQ of the official page on the Team Fortress 2 site, there are three ways to earn Mann Up Mode items:

– “Each time you complete an unfinished Mission on your ToDB in Mann Up Mode, you’ll earn an item. This will consume the Tour of Duty Ticket you presented to enter Mann Up Mode.”

– “When you complete all of the Missions on a ToDB, you’ll earn a random rare item. These rare items can only be obtained by completing ALL Missions in a Tour of Duty.”

– “You can also obtain items using Squad Surplus Vouchers.”

These “Squad Surplus Vouchers” can be purchased for $1.99. They are enabled prior to the start of any mission in Mann Up Mode, and upon success of that mission, you and all of your teammates will receive an item. Valve also notes that Tour of Duty Tickets and Squad Surplus Vouchers are only used up if you successfully complete a mission. So if you fail, you’ll get them back to be used for another time.

It’s been a long time coming, TF2 fans, but the moment you’ve been waiting for is finally here. Get your Steam Friends together, load up Team Fortress 2, and enjoy the game’s first co-op mode by facing Gray Mann’s robotic onslaught head-on.
