Sony has confirmed that a new PS3 update will be released on Thursday, June 27th that will fix the problems reported with firmware update 4.45. The update which rolled out earlier this week had a unintended consequence of bricking a number of PlayStation 3 consoles. Sony says it was a “small number” of systems affected, and have been working towards as fix. It appears that they have found the root of the problem.

“We have identified the issue related to the PlayStation 3 software update (version 4.45) that impacted a small number of PS3 systems earlier this week,” Sony explained. “A new PS3 system software update is planned to be released on June 27th that resolves the issue. Thank you for your patience and understanding and we apologize for the inconvenience.”

It’s unclear what Sony expects those that have been affected by the update to do with their system at this point. The PlayStation forums aren’t 100% clear on whether this new update will fix their problems, as many are in a looping bug that doesn’t allow for another update without the reformatting of their HDDs.

We’ll have to wait and see what Sony’s response to situation is, but you can follow along on the PlayStation Community website.
