One of Microsoft’s most touted features is the Xbox One’s use of the Cloud to improve their games. We’ve already heard many promises concerning Microsoft’s new initiative, but some of it may sound too good to be true according to Sony’s Mark Cerny.
Trying to boost graphics doesn’t work using the Cloud
The Lead Architect on the PlayStation 4 explains that a console’s processing power or visual output isn’t something that can be outsourced to cloud. In an interview with IGN, Cerny discusses the Cloud, how the PS4 will use it’s own version of it, and debunks some of the myths surrounding it.
“To the extent that it’s possible to do computing in the Cloud, PlayStation 4 can do computing in the Cloud. We do somethings today.. Matchmaking is done in the Cloud, and it works very well. If we think about things that don’t work well… Trying to boost the quality of the graphics, that won’t work well in the Cloud.”
So while there’s no doubt that the Cloud will have some impact on the next-generation, we’re unlikely to see it making either the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One more powerful. According to Cerny, the PlayStation 4’s will use the Cloud, but it won’t be to increase the power of the console by doing so.
