With Suicide Squad out in just a couple of days, there has been an increase in tracking for the film’s Box Office earnings.
As reported by The Wrap, Suicide Squad could be on track to earn around $130 million to $140 million. If it’s the latter, it could have the third highest grossing weekend in 2016 behind Batman vs Superman and Captain America: Civil War.
In between all of these movies is Finding Dory which grossed $135 million in its opening weekend. However, Finding Dory eventually went on to become the highest earner in North America in 2016 making well over $450 million so far.
In either case, the DC villains are easily on track to set a new August record. The biggest opening weekend in the month of August belongs to Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel’s movie earned $94.3 million back in August 2014.
The fact that DC’s movie is trending big with audiences is good news for the movie industry as a whole. Outside of Captain America: Civil War and Finding Dory, the Summer blockbuster season has been disappointing in terms of revenue.
Suicide Squad has a lot to live up to for both Warner Bros. and DC. After the polarizing reception of Batman vs Superman, they need this movie to be a critical hit.
